Samit Dravid to represent India at Under-19 level. Samit scored 362 runs and took 16 wickets in Cooch Behar Trophy. All you need to know about Rahul Dravid's son Samit Dravid.
Like father, like son. This proverb has seen mixed results in world cricket. While there have been sons who have become cricketing legends just like their fathers, other wards have fallen apart and failed to make a mark. However, another son is making all the right noises and taking giant strides in his elementary phase in professional cricket. Meet Samit Dravid, son of former Indian skipper and coach Rahul Dravid.
Samit, 18, has recently been included in the Under-19 squad to play Australia in a multi-format series at home in September and October. He was part of the triumphant Mysuru Warriors squad, which defeated the Bengaluru Blasters in the final of the 2024 Maharaja T20 Trophy. The all-rounder had a below-par performance in this tournament as he managed just 82 runs in 7 matches and was not called on to bowl. However, it was his performance in the Cooch Behar Trophy that earned him a ticket in the U-19 squad. He scored 362 runs and took 16 wickets with his medium-pace bowling in 8 matches for Karnataka in the tournament.
Living up to the ‘Dravid’ mark
With Dravid as his surname, Samit has been already grabbing the limelight with his batting and bowling videos all over the internet. He has an uncanny batting resemblance to his legendary father when it comes to the cover drives, square cuts, and the whip over the leg side. He also has a smooth bowling action and generates good pace and bounce.
However, it is still early days for young Samit, and the U-19 format series against the Aussies will be a true test of his character. There will be pressure to live up to the Dravid surname, and all eyes will be on him. However, he has sound advice to pay heed to, coming from his childhood coach Karthik Jeshwanth, who was quoted as saying, asking Samit “not to be bothered about any outside noise or attention. He will be judged on his own skills and what he does on the field. He has to learn to live with the attention without it affecting his batting.”
Like father, like son, indeed?
Unlike his father, Samit wears spectacles while batting, and they’re off while bowling. However, like his father, Samit has a sane head on his shoulders. His Mysuru Warriors coach RX Murali had only heaps of praise when he told a news website that Samit “is grounded, sweet, and all his team-mates have nothing but good stuff to share about him. He is pretty easygoing. He has no airs about where he comes from."
Samit won’t be the last to play with a surname that is a legend in cricketing records. There have been successful cricketers’ sons in Indian cricket such as Mohinder Amarnath and Sanjay Manjrekar who created their own glory to fame away from the shadow of their illustrious fathers. Samit just needs to follow suit.
