Ben Stokes hasn’t looked in his primary touch for this CWC 2023, but he put England in a healthy position from the middle over disasters.
He took some time at the start before driving Paul van Meekeren through covers for his first boundary. After pulling Bas de Leede in the square for another four, he whipped de Leede over mid-wicket for six to bring up his fifty, which mostly came on singles & doubles.
He took on Aryan Dutt in the 45th over for three sixes, with one of them launched over long-on. He hoisted de Leede for another six straight down the ground before ramping him in the third man for a wise boundary. A reverse sweep in the third man for a four took Stokes to his fifth ODI century.
He ended with 108 runs in 84 balls, shouldering on six boundaries and six over boundaries, and now he has 3379 ODI runs in 113 games.
Malan gave England a flying start with 87 run knock
Dawid Malan, one of the batters to be in some sort of nick from the England side, put the bowlers in all parts. Malan opened his account with three consecutive fours against Logan van Beek through cover and short fine leg. After driving van Beek straight down the ground, Malan again clubbed him for three consecutive fours to bring up his seventh ODI fifty in 36 balls.
After slog sweeping Roelof van der Merwe for a six at deep backward square leg, he smashed him over deep mid-wicket for a six. He was finally dismissed on 87 in 74 balls with the help of 10 fours and a couple of sixes to have 1419 ODI runs in 29 games.
Woakes put up an all-round show with 51 & 1/19
Chris Woakes, coming at number eight in a tricky position, put a vital partnership with Stokes. He pounced Ackermann through extra cover for a cover before smacking van Beek in the deep region for another four. He cleared deep midwicket for a six before ramping de Leede over short third man to celebrate his sixth ODI fifty. He managed 51 in 45 balls with five fours and one six.
He also picked up the early wicket of Max Odowd (5), who chipped the ball straight to mid-on. Woakes finished with 1/19 in seven overs and now has 1520 runs and 172 wickets in 121 ODIs.
