CWC 2023, IND vs ENG: India's bowlers decimate Eng: hosts back to no. 1 spot

CWC 2023, India vs England: David Willey's 3-45, Rohit Sharma's 87 and Jasprit Bumrah-Mohammed Shami's opening spell (4-16) are top performances. India beat England and move to 1st spot in points table.

Brief Scores: IND 229/9 (Rohit 87, Sky 49, Willey 3/45) beat ENG 129 (Livingstone 27, Shami 4/22, Bumrah 3/32) by 100 runs.

Player of the match: Rohit Sharma (87 run knock)

Indian bowlers with consistent line and length made 229 feel like 350 for England, who looked terrible with shot selections and planning. Unlike the previous encounters in this campaign, India struggled at the top with the bat. But captain Rohit Sharma stood tall and settled the nerves with his fine and mature knock.

Unbeaten India looked to stretch their winning momentum, while wounded England aimed to rectify their puzzled team balance. Both sides met at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

India trail England 3-4 in ODI WC head-to-head with one tied result in 2011. However, India led England 57-44 in the overall ODI face-off.

Talking point: Five bowlers' strategy worked for India

There were discussions about whether India should use a five-bowler combination in the campaign. But with the injury of Hardik Pandya, they had to bring Mohammad Shami, and that plan of going with five bowlers have worked in their favor as they successfully defended a low total in tough conditions.

India regains top position with 100-run win as England’s nightmare continues

England captain Jos Butler, on winning the toss, opted to bowl first on a track that could help the spinners. Both teams went with an unchanged playing eleven.

India faced early trouble to find themselves at 40/3 in 12 overs. The 91-run fourth-wicket partnership rescued India from choppy waters to take them to 180/5 in 40 overs. But England came back strongly again with the ball as Suryakumar Yadav’s 49-run knock pushed India to 229/8 in their allotted 50 overs.

England had a small, decent start at 26/0 in the fourth over. But Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, in a half-hour spell, destroyed them to 40/4. England didn’t stand back from there, bundling out for 129 as India gained its sixth straight victory by 100 runs.

David Willey troubled India with 3/45

David Willey has been decent with the ball for England so far in the tournament, but he made a big contribution in this encounter. After putting pressure on Virat Kohli, he finally managed to send him back. Kohli, on a nine-ball duck, danced down the track only to get the bottom of the blade as the ball ballooned in the air and ended in the hands of mid-off.

Willey returned to break the 91-run stand, sending back KL Raul (39), who, in the same fashion, came down the track for a lofted drive to find a mid-on fielder. He cut some runs from India at the backend with the wicket of Suryakumar (49), who carved the slower delivery to the deep fielder.

Willey finished with 3/45 in 10 overs to grab 94 ODI scalps in 70 games.

Rohit settled India from early trouble with 87 run knock

Rohit Sharma has batted in a brutal mode throughout this CWC 2023 campaign. After early trouble, he pulled Willey for a six over cow corner before smashing him straight down the ground for a six. With wickets falling from the other end, Rohit focused on rotating the strike. After cutting Mark Wood through backward point for a boundary, he swept Adil Rashid for the same result to celebrate his 54th ODI half-century.

Rohit curved Liam Livingstone for two more boundaries before using his feet to clear the mid-off fielder for another four. He finished 87 in 101 balls with 10 fours and three sixes to have 10510 ODI runs in 249 innings.

Shami-Bumrah blew away England with combined figures of 4/16 in six over the opening spell

Since returning to the side, Mohammed Shami has been top-notch, and he displayed his purple patch again. He sent back Ben Stokes on a ten-ball duck with an inswing ball that came back sharply to disturb the stumps. On the first ball of his third over, Jonny Bairstow (14) chopped onto the stumps.

Bumrah, too, fired up in that opening spell. He broke the stumps of Dawid Malan (16) before trapping Joe Root before the stumps on a first-ball duck. From 26/0, England slipped to 40/4 inside six overs.

Shami finished with 4/22 to have 180 wickets in 96 ODIs, and Bumrah ended with 3/32, moving to 143 wickets in 84 ODIs.
