The International Cricket Council (ICC), on Friday, January 21, announced the schedule of the eighth edition of the T20 World Cup on Friday, slated to be played in Australia later this year.

This is the very first time that Australia has been given the opportunity to host the mega event. India will open their 2022 T20 World Cup campaign with a mega clash against Pakistan at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on October 23.

Here it is worth noting that it will be the first World Cup match between the two Asian teams at the MCG. Both nations last played a World Cup match in Australia in the 2015 edition of the 50-over event at the Adelaide Oval.

The mega event will witness the participation of 12 teams in the finals of the tournament. India with teams like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and South Africa are fused in Group 2 while Group 1 consists of teams like Australia, New Zealand, Afghanistan, England; two more teams will be joining each of the groups from the qualifiers.

Group 1: Australia, England, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Qualifier A1, Qualifier B2.

Group 2: India, Pakistan, South Africa, Bangladesh, Qualifier B1, Qualifier A2.

Defending champions Australia will kick-off their tournament campaign against the previous edition finalists New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on October 22.
