Brief scores: India 247/9 (Abhishek Sharma 135, Brydon Carse 3/38) beat England 97 (Phil Salt 55, Mohammed Shami 3/25) by 150 runs.  Player of the Series: Varun Chakravarthy (14 wickets) Player of the Match: Abhishek Sharma (135 runs, 2/3)

India won the fifth T20I against England at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai by 150 runs to win the series 4-1. India posted 247/9 thanks to a brilliant knock of 135 runs off just 54 balls from opener Abhishek Sharma. Later, bowlers came to the party to dismiss England all out for 97 with 9.3 overs to spare.

Talking Point: Brendon McCullum fails in first white-ball assignment

England came into India with much hope after Brendon McCullum was also handed the coaching duties of white-ball format. However, England, under captain Jos Buttler, failed to click as a unit. The batters were inconsistent, while the bowlers were guilty of bowling too predictably. England's batting unit could not be cohesive due to frequent batting collapses. In the fourth T20I, they floundered away a great start, threw away their wickets, and lost a match from a winning position. Overall, there were a few brilliant individual performances, but England failed to click as a team.

Abhishek Sharma destroys England's bowling attack

Asked to bat first, opener Sanju Samson cracked the first ball of the innings from Jofra Archer for a six with a pull off a short ball. Samson cracked another six and a four as India raced to 16 in the first over. From there on, it was Abhishek Sharma’s show as he single-handedly destroyed the England bowling attack. With the pitch offering true bounce, Abhishek feasted on the bowling attack, playing on the rise, lofting, backfoot punching, hoicking, slashing, and smacking the balls all over the ground. He raced to his fifty off just 17 balls. He continued the momentum from there on as he raced to his second T20I ton off just 37 balls.

He slowed down a bit after reaching his ton, but as wickets kept tumbling at the other end, he accelerated in the deep to help India score 247/9. India were 143/2 by the 10th over and could muster just another 105 runs in the last 10 overs as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Abhishek fell for 135 off 54 balls with 13 sixes and 7 fours. Shivam Dube played a cameo of 13-ball 30 with 3 fours and 2 sixes. For England, Brydon Carse took 3/38.

England succumbed to a huge target

Opener Phil Salt began the chase in the right earnest, hitting two fours and a six off the first three balls of the innings bowled by Mohammed Shami. But Shami came back to dismiss Ben Duckett for a golden duck. Varun Chakravarthy got into action straight away, making England skipper Jos Buttler hole out at long off. Ravi Bishnoi then dismissed Harry Brook to reduce England to 59/3. Meanwhile, Salt was going hammer and tongs, reaching his fifty before edging it behind off Shivam Dube’s first ball of the spell.

Salt made 55 off 23 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes. Abhishek, who had earlier flourished with the bat, took 2 wickets in his only over to hasten the end of England's innings. Shami took the last wicket to fall and emerged as the most successful bowler of the match with 3/25.
