Brief Scores: MI 214/4 (Suryakumar Yadav 55, Tim David 45 not out, R Ashwin 2/27) beat RR 212/7 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 124, Arshad Khan 3/39) by 6 wickets.

Player of the match: Yashasvi Jaiswal (124 off 62 )

Mumbai Indians pulled off a record chase at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to beat Rajasthan Royals by 6 wickets in IPL 2023. It was also the 1000th IPL match and the birthday of Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma. The win overshadowed a brilliant knock of 124 made by Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Mumbai Indians dominate Rajasthan Royals in a stunning win

In a match between Young Royals and Mumbai Indians, Yashasvi Jaiswal's superb century went in vain as Mumbai Indians chased down the mammoth target of 213 runs. Jaiswal's 124 runs off 62 balls were studded with boundaries and maximums, and he had a 72-run partnership with skipper Jos Buttler. Despite a strong effort from Jaiswal and other contributors, the Young Royals could only post 212/7 in their innings.

In response, Mumbai Indians lost an early wicket as Rohit was clean-bowled by Sandeep Sharma. However, Ishan Kishan and other batsmen kept the scoreboard ticking, and the match went down to the wire. With 17 runs needed from the last over, Tim David's heroics led Mumbai Indians to victory. He smashed three consecutive sixes off the first three balls of the over to finish unbeaten on 45 off 14 balls. While Jaiswal's century was a standout performance, it was not enough to secure a win for the Young Royals. This result marks the second instance of a century in a losing cause this season after Venkatesh Iyer's knock earlier in the competition.

Talking points from MI vs RR game

Mumbai Indians’ star-studded batting line-up finally clicked as they chased down a record target of 213 at the Wankhede Stadium. It needed a special cameo of Tim David’s 45 not out to pull off a stunning chase in the last over. However, Mumbai Indians have a few reasons to worry with their opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan not clicking together and unable to give a strong and quick start to the team, putting much pressure on the middle-order to bail the team out.

Yashasvi Jaiswal destroys the Mumbai attack

Choosing to bat first, RR again had a great start, with Jaiswal dominating the run-scoring while his partner Jos Buttler struggled for timing. The two put on 72 runs in 7.1 overs before Buttler holed out in the deep to substitute Ramandeep Singh for 19-ball 18 runs off Piyush Chawla’s bowling. Even with field restrictions over, Jaiswal got his gaps with ease, and played improvised shots with his scoops, slog sweep, reverse sweep and switch hit. Even though wickets kept tumbling at the other end, Jaiswal kept on scoring runs at a good strike rate to keep the target of a total of over 200 within reach.

The next best partnership was 40 runs between Jaiswal and Jason Holder (11) who holed out to Tim David off Jofra Archer’s bowling. Sanju Samson (14), Devdutt Padikkal (2), and Shimron Hetmyer (8) could not make the best use of a good batting wicket, but Jaiswal ensured RR finished with a competitive score of 212/7. Jaiswal made 124 off 62 balls with 16 fours and 8 sixes before he fell in the last over to a full toss from Arshad Khan, who ended with 3/39.

Tim David finishes it off in style

Mumbai had a poor start to the innings, losing their skipper Rohit Sharma bowled for 3 by Sandeep Sharma in the second over. Ishan Kishan and Cameron Green then rebuild the innings with a stand of 62 runs in 6.2 overs with the Aussie flaying the bowling attack. Kishan fell first, holing out in the deep to Trent Boult off R Ashwin’s over. It then brought SKY to the middle and he raised the tempo of the game. Green fell for 44 off 26 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes as he was caught by Boult off Ashwin’s over. SKY raced to a fifty with his trademark scoops, flicks, and glances, but fell to a brilliant catch in the deep by Sandeep Sharma off Boult. With the dew settling in, batting became easier but it still needed Tim David’s cameo of 14-ball 45 not out with 2 fours and 5 sixes to steer Mumbai home. Tim cracked three straight sixes off the last over bowled by Jason Holder to win the match for his team. This was the highest successful chase at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Let’s scan the top three performances from the game between MI and RR in IPL 2023

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 124

Jaiswal single-handedly destroyed the Mumbai Indians’ bowling attack. His debut ton was a lesson on how to anchor the innings and play attacking cricket with a strike rate of 200. He scored 124 off 62 balls with 16 fours and 8 sixes. It means 112 runs came in fours and sixes, while he ran only 12 runs during his knock. His teammates could manage just 63 runs off 59 balls, with the next best score being 18 from Jos Buttler.

It was apparent Yashasvi Jaiswal was in his zone as neither his teammates’ struggle to score runs nor Mumbai’s decent bowling attack could make an impression on him. Jaiswal played to his strengths and reaped rich dividends, pulling, scooping, reverse scooping and switch-hitting to score most of his fours and sixes. However, despite making the most of the short boundaries behind the wicket, his best shot was the six he hit over the bowler’s head on a rising delivery from Jofra Archer.

Suryakumar Yadav’s 55

SKY did what he does best. He flayed the Rajasthan bowling attack with his flicks, scoops, and glances. He raced to his fifty off just 24 balls, and he took on Kuldeep Singh’s bowling for extra treatment, hitting a six and three straight fours bowled by the pacer. SKY dominated all the partnerships he had with his teammates. He stitched a stand of 51 runs with Tilak Varma in 5 overs to give MI hopes of a win.

Suryakumar Yadav smashed 8 fours and 2 sixes during his 29-ball knock. It was his trademark scoop from a ball outside the off stump that cost his wicket as a mistimed hit saw Sandeep Sharma running from the short fine leg to pull off a stunning catch and send SKY back to the pavilion.

Tim David’s 45 not out

Tim David came in to bat in the 16th over at the fall of SKY’s wicket when Mumbai needed 61 runs in 26 balls. David took the game deep and finish it off in the last over when he cracked three straight sixes bowled by Jason Holder when 17 runs were needed off 6 balls. David planned the assault accurately, knowing Rajasthan would have to go after their weak link in the last over. And David did what he was expected to do, smashing three straight sixes to finish the job for his team. In the last 62 runs scored by Mumbai to win the match, David scored 45 runs out of them, smashing 38 runs in boundaries and sixes.
