The mini auction for IPL 2024 is set to take place in Dubai on December 19 and there is huge excitement around the occasion. Primarily due to events that unfolded when the IPL trade window was opened. The complexion and combination of certain teams change as they head to the auctions with a motive to fill in some of their key slots.

Chennai Super Kings

We start with the defending champions Chennai Super Kings who will once again be led by MS Dhoni in the coming edition. But before that, the 5-time champions will have a task in hand to fill some of the slots which are emptied thanks to some noticeable departures.

Ambati Rayudu’s retirement has created a void in the middle-order, while Ben Stokes’ recurrent injury concerns have forced CSK to release the England Test skipper. So, the ‘men in yellow’ will have to find replacements for the duo come the auction. Apart from that, CSK does need a fast bowler, be it India and overseas.

CSK’s current squad: MS Dhoni (c) (wk), Moeen Ali, Deepak Chahar, Devon Conway (wk), Tushar Deshpande, Shivam Dube, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Ravindra Jadeja, Ajay Mandal, Mukesh Choudhary, Matheesha Pathirana, Ajinkya Rahane, Shaik Rasheed, Mitchell Santner, Simarjeet Singh, Nishant Sindhu, Prashant Solanki, Maheesh Theekshana

Purse Left: INR 31.4 Crore

Slots left: 6 (3 overseas)

Players CSK may look to target: Manish Pandey/Karun Nair, Mitchell Starc/ Pat Cummins, Daryl Mitchell/ Gerald Coetzee, Kartik Tyagi, Umesh Yadav, Harshal Patel

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians have been in the news lately a lot and will have a new skipper to helm things for IPL 2024 in Hardik Pandya. With Pandya back to the team, they have their batting order sorted but bowling remains a concern. The departure of Jofra Archer made things worse for them and they need a suitable replacement for him.

Apart from that, MI doesn’t have an overseas spinner who can bat down the order or a quality foreign spinner. These could be the high-priority slots that the 5-time champions will look to fill in the auctions.

MI’s current squad: Hardik Pandya (Traded from Gujarat Titans), Rohit Sharma, Dewald Brevis, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Tim David, Vishnu Vinod, Arjun Tendulkar, Shams Mulani, Nehal Wadhera, Jasprit Bumrah, Kumar Kartikeya, Piyush Chawla, Akash Madhwal, Jason Behrendorff, Romario Shepherd (Traded from Lucknow Super Giants)

Purse Left: INR 17.75 Crore

Slots left: 8 (4 overseas)

Players MI may look to target: Wanindu Hasaranga, Rachin Ravindra, Lockie Ferguson Mujeeb-ur-Rahman, Mitchell Starc/ Pat Cummins, Kartik Tyagi

Gujarat Titans

Gujarat Titans will have a seemingly new skipper in Shubman Gill after the trade of Hardik Pandya back to MI and they will have to be highly active come the auctions.

The former IPL 2022 champions do have a solid team, but they still need to find a suitable quality player to match skills of Pandya. Apart from that, Alzarri Joseph’s release has also left them with a significant void.

GT’s current squad: Abhinav Sadarangani, B. Sai Sudharsan, Darshan Nalkande, David Miller, Jayant Yadav, Joshua Little, Kane Williamson, Matthew Wade, Mohammad Shami, Mohit Sharma, Noor Ahmad, R. Sai Kishore, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Shubman Gill, Vijay Shankar, Wriddhiman Saha

Purse Left: INR 38.15 Crore

Slots left: 8 (2 overseas)

Players GT may look to target: Mitchell Starc/ Pat Cummins, Kartik Tyagi, Shardul Thakur, Shahrukh Khan, Daryl Mitchell, Gerald Coetzee

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders released as many as 12 players including high-value ones like Shardul Thakur, and Lockie Ferguson, which has given them a huge purse going into the auctions. They suffered due to a lack of a stable opening pair last season and the middle-order got a boost with the return of Shreyas.

But still, they require an India wicketkeeper at the top while a local all-rounder comes in the lower order. Apart from that, KKR do need an overseas pacer to complement their India counterparts.

KKR’s current squad:  Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Shreyas Iyer, Jason Roy, Sunil Narine, Suyash Sharma, Anukul Roy, Andre Russell, Venkatesh Iyer, Harshit Rana, Vaibhav Arora, Varun Chakaravarthy

Purse Left: INR 32.7 Crore

Slots left: 12 (4 overseas)

Players KKR may look to target: Mitchell Starc/ Pat Cummins, Alzarri Joseph, Gerald Coetzee, Shardul Thakur/Harshal Patel, KS Barath, Harvik Desai, Dilshan Madhusanka

Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants being one of the consistent sides, understandably didn’t release many of their players but did trade Avesh Khan for Devdutt Padikkal to strengthen their batting. This has however cribbled their bowling and might want to add two or three quality pacers.

LSG’s current squad:  KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, Deepak Hooda, K Gowtham, Krunal Pandya, Kyle Mayers, Marcus Stoinis, Prerak Mankad, Yudhvir Singh, Mark Wood, Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, Ravi Bishnoi, Yash Thakur, Amit Mishra, Naveen-ul-Haq, Devdutt Padikkal

Purse Left: INR 13.5 Crore

Slots left: 6 (2 overseas)

Players LSG may look to target: Shardul Thakur, Yash Dayal, Kartik Tyagi, Omarzai, Lockie Ferguson, Shivam Mavi

Royal Challengers Bangalore

RCB need to put a lot of thought into their auctions as they bid to make a massive overhaul to their bowling department. With the trade-in off Cameron Green, RCB has strengthened their batting but left out a host of bowlers in the retentions.

They will need an India pacer to go along with an overseas quick and potent spinner to replace Wanindu Hasaranga.

RCB’s current squad:  Faf du Plessis (C), Glenn Maxwell, Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, Anuj Rawat, Dinesh Karthik, Suyash Prabhudessai, Will Jacks, Mahipal Lomror, Karn Sharma, Manoj Bhandage, Vyshak Vijay Kumar, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, Reece Topley, Himanshu Sharma, Rajan Kumar, Mayank Dagar

Purse Left: INR 23.25 Crore

Slots left: 6 (3 overseas)

Players RCB may look to target: Gerald Coetzee/ Starc/ Cummins, Wanindu Hasarnga, Mujeeb-ur-Rahman, Harshal Patel/ Shardul Thakur, Shivam Mavi

Rajasthan Royals

After a splendid showing in 2022, Rajasthan Royals missed out on a playoff qualification in 2023 thanks to their unstable middle-order. This they might want to change and bring in some firepower in their lower middle-order apart from a backup for Trent Boult.

RR’s current squad Sanju Samson (c), Jos Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, Donovan Ferreira, Kunal Rathore, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Sen, Navdeep Saini, Prasidh Krishna, Sandeep Sharma, Trent Boult, Yuzvendra Chahal, Adam Zampa, Avesh Khan (traded from LSG).

Purse Left: INR 14.5 Crore

Slots left: 8 (3 overseas)

Players RR may look to target: Harry Brook, Rovman Powell, Rilee Rossouw, Harshal Patel, Chris Woakes

Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals will be boosted by the return of their skipper Rishabh Pant for the season, and it will add great depth to the batting order. India batters’ performance was a concern for the team in Pant’s absence and the team couldn’t quite make the impact.

Here they might need a wicketkeeper, given the fact Pant may not be fully fit for keeping duties aside from this, DC desperately need a finisher having released Rovman Powell.

DC’s current squad: Rishabh Pant, Pravin Dubey, David Warner, Vicky Ostwal, Prithvi Shaw, Anrich Nortje, Abishek Porel, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Lungi Ngidi, Lalit Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed, Mitchell Marsh, Ishant Sharma, Yash Dhull, Mukesh Kumar.

Purse Left: INR 28.95 Crore

Slots left: 9 (4 overseas)

Players DC may look to target: KS Barath, Narayan Jagadeesan, Shahrukh Khan, Michael Bracewell, Rovman Powell, David Willey

Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings surprisingly retained their core despite not finishing in the top 4 last season. This makes them a franchise with lots of funds to fit in players. One aspect they would need to make sure is having strong finishers and lower-order batters.

They released Shahrukh Khan and a replacement for him will be the first checkbox they would want to tick.

PBKS’s current squad: Shikhar Dhawan (C), Jonny Bairstow, Atharva Taide, Harpreet Singh, Shivam Singh, Arshdeep Singh, Harpreet Brar, Kagiso Rabada, Nathan Ellis, Rahul Chahar, Vidwath Kaverappa, Liam Livingstone, Rishi Dhawan, Sam Curran, Sikandar Raza, Jitesh Sharma, Prabhsimran Singh.

Purse Left: INR 29.1 Crore

Slots left: 8 (2 overseas)

Players PBKS may look to target: Travis Head, Shahrukh Khan, David Willey, Jason Holder

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Lastly, we have Sunrisers Hyderabad who largely underperformed despite having a great middle-order at their disposal. They will have to strengthen their spin department, especially having someone in the mould of Rashid Khan and a foreign pacer. They have a huge purse with them to make a strategic purchase.

SRH’s current squad: Aiden Markram, Abdul Samad, Rahul Tripathi, Glenn Phillips, Heinrich Klaasen, Mayank Agarwal, Anmolpreet Singh, Upendra Yadav, Nitish Reddy, Shahbaz Ahmed (Traded from RCB), Abhishek Sharma, Marco Jansen, Washington Sundar, Sanvir Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mayank Markande, Umran Malik, T Natarajan, Fazahaq Farooqi

Purse Left: INR 34 Crore

Slots left: 6 (3 overseas)

Players SRH may look to target: Sarfaraz Khan/ Karun Nair, Gerald Coetzee, Michael Bracewell, Jason Holder, Chris Woakes, Wanindu Hasaranga, Shahrukh Khan
