The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council (GC) has finally revealed the rules for the retention and mega auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Franchises can retain a total of six players from the existing squad, either via retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) card. These can have a maximum of five capped (India and overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped players.

The auction purse has been increased to INR 120 crore for the 18th season of the event. Also, there has been a new rule regarding the uncapped player. A capped player who has featured in the international stage five years before the year of the relevant season will be coined as uncapped. He also can’t carry a BCCI central contract.

The first and fourth retained players will earn INR 18 crore, while the second and fifth will get INR 14 crore. For the third retention, the price will drop down to INR 11 crore. For the uncapped players, teams need to spend just INR 4 crore.

The deadline for the submission of retained players is October 31, 2024, until 5 pm IST. Any player who gets capped on or before that period will not be considered an uncapped player.

Here’s a look at possible retentions by IPL franchises ahead of the mega auction:

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)

The Faf du Plessis-led side finished fourth last season. Undoubtedly, their first retained player will be Virat Kohli. They can go with Mohammad Siraj as the second option and keep Yash Dayal as the uncapped player.

Rajat Patidar can be the third retention, while one of Faf or Cameron Green is expected to be the fourth retention. The rest of the two players will be slotted under RTM.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

CSK can positively retain their former captain, MS Dhoni, as an uncapped player, whose last international game was in July 2019. Their first retention is expected to be the current captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, followed by Matheesha Pathirana.

Shivam Dube can be the third retention, while Ravindra Jadeja can be the fourth retained player. Either they can choose Rachin Ravindra as the fifth retention or go to the mega auction with one RTM.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

The runners-up are expected to go with Pat Cummins as the first retention, with Travis Head as the second. Abhishek Sharma can bag the third retained player tag, while Heinrich Klassen is expected to be the fourth.

They could have easily gone with Nitish Kumar Reddy as the uncapped player. But if he makes his debut in the upcoming Bangladesh series, then they have to go with Abdul Samad as the uncapped player.

Rajasthan Royals (RR)

Captain Sanju Samson is expected to be the first retained player, followed by opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. Trent Boult is expected to be the third retained player, while Jos Buttler can be the fourth. Yuzvendra Chahal should be listed as the fifth retention.

Ideally, they would have loved to have Riyan Parag, but he is no longer an uncapped player. Using the rule, the Royals can go with Sandeep Sharma as the uncapped player, whose last international game was in 2015.

Delhi Capitals (DC)

The retentions for the Delhi Capitals look to be the most straightforward. Rishabh Pant should be the first retention, followed by Kuldeep Yadav as the second. Jake Fraser McGurk can become the third retention.

Axar Patel is expected to claim the fourth retained player’s tag. The second-highest run-getter for them last season, Tristian Stubbs, is expected to be their fifth. Abhishek Porel, the backup India wicket-keeper, could be the best uncapped option for them.

Gujarat Titans (GT)

Captain Shubman Gill will potentially be the first retained player, followed by Mohammed Shami. Sai Sudharsan, the leading run-scorer for GT in 2024, can be the third retention. Rashid Khan will probably be the fourth retained player for them.

Rahul Tewatia will be a superb uncapped player for them. They can also go with Mohit Sharma in the prospect, as his last international game was in 2015. It will be up to them to decide if they want David Miller as the fifth retention or to keep their RTM card alive.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

The defending champions are expected to go with Shreyas Iyer as the first retention, followed by Rinku Singh. One of Phil Salt or Harshit Rana can be retained as the third player. The two West Indies all-rounders, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, are likely to be the fourth and fifth retentions, respectively.

In the case of the uncapped player, they can shoot for one of Ramandeep Singh or 19-year-old Angkrish Raghuvanshi.

Mumbai Indians (MI)

Without a shadow of a doubt, Jasprit Bumrah should be their first retained player. Rohit Sharma can be the second in the list, followed by Ishan Kishan as the third. Captain Hardik Pandya is expected to be the fourth retention, backed up by Suryakumar Yadav in fifth place.

Regarding the uncapped player, Nehal Wadhera looks to be a possibility. Akash Madhwal is another name in this department.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)

The captain of the franchise, KL Rahul, can be the first retention, followed by Quinton de Kock. Ravi Bishnoi is expected to be the third retention. Nicholas Pooran may fit the bill as the fourth retained player. Ayush Badoni is their brightest option as an uncapped player.

Mayank Yadav was excellent last season, but he has a knack for injury. Hence, the management can think of using the RTM for the speedster.

Punjab Kings (PBKS)

It’s hard to guess the retention of a franchise that is inconsistent in this department. Punjab can be one of the rare teams that can go with two uncapped players, Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma. Arshdeep Singh seems to be their first retention, followed by Liam Livingstone.

The wicket-keeper batter, Jitesh Sharma, is expected to be the third on the list. They can go with Kagiso Rabada as the fourth retained player.
