Franchises have announced their retentions for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Some big names have been released while there have been a few expected retentions. While few franchises have retained their core, others have retained a few uncapped players only, looking to overhaul the squad for better results. Here is a look at the retentions of each team and the strategy they will adopt in the auction. For the record, each franchise has Rs 120 crore to make up the squad.

Mumbai Indians

No. of players retained: 5 – Jasprit Bumrah (Rs 18 crore), Suryakumar Yadav (Rs 16.35 crore) Hardik Pandya (Rs 16.35 crore), Rohit Sharma (Rs 16.30 crore) and Tilak Varma (Rs 8 crore)

Star players not retained – Ishan Kishan, Tim David

Money left: Rs 45 crore

No. of right-to-match option – 1 (one uncapped player only)

Auction strategy: Mumbai Indians have done well to retain their core Indian players within Rs 75 crore cap. Hardik Pandya is set to lead the team again despite a disastrous run last season. Mumbai will be looking to strengthen their bowling in the auction. They will need a pacer, either local or overseas, who can complement Bumrah and hunt in pairs. Mumbai will also be looking for a quality spinner.

Chennai Super Kings

No. of players retained: 5  - Ruturaj Gaikwad (Rs 18 crore), Ravindra Jadeja (Rs 18 crore), Matheesha Pathirana (Rs 13 crore), Shivam Dube (Rs 12 crore), MS Dhoni (Rs 4 crore)

Star players not retained: Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande

Money left: Rs 55 crore

No. of right-to-match options: 1 (One capped or uncapped player)

Auction strategy: Like MI, Chennai Super Kings too have retained their core and not tinkered with their squad much. However, they could not retain a few consistent players who have served the franchise well over the years. It would be interesting to see how they use their RTM cards to retain either one capped or uncapped player. Will they choose between Kiwi stars Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway or an India player in Deepak Chahar or Tushar Deshpande? Nevertheless, CSK have always played smart in the IPL auction.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

No. of players retained: 3 - Virat Kohli (Rs 21 crore), Rajat Patidar (Rs 11 crore), Yash Dayal (Rs 5 crore)

Star players not retained: Glenn Maxwell, Mohammed Siraj, Faf du Plessis

Money left: Rs 83 crore

No. of right-to-match options: 3 (Two capped or one uncapped players)

Auction strategy: Royal Challengers Bengaluru might use an RTM card to retain a capped player in Faf du Plessis who could captain the team again unless the management is looking for a new skipper. They might persuade Kohli to lead the team if they don’t get a suitable replacement for a captain. They have retained two youngsters in Patidar and Dayal showing they are looking to invest in players who can serve them long. With Rs 83 crore, RCB might splurge on a few big names and go on a bidding war with other franchisees.

Kolkata Knight Riders

No. of players retained: 6 - Rinku Singh (Rs 13 crore), Varun Chakravarthy (Rs 12 crore), Sunil Narine (Rs 12 crore), Andre Russell (Rs 12 crore), Harshit Rana (Rs 4 crore), Ramandeep Singh (Rs 4 crore)

Star players not retained: Shreyas Iyer, Mitchell Starc, Phil Salt

Money left: Rs 51 crore

No. of right-to-match options: 0

Auction strategy: Kolkata Knight Riders could not retain their winning captain Shreyas Iyer who decided to go into the pool. They have a task at hand to find a new captain now. They also do not have any RTM card to retain any of their players who did a commendable job in the last season. However, their core is still intact as they were able to retain their top performers, both local and overseas. Going by their past season’s strategy in the IPL auction, they might splurge on a few star players in the upcoming auction.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

No. of players retained: 5  - Heinrich Klaasen (Rs 23 crore), Pat Cummins (Rs 18 crore), Abhishek Sharma (Rs 14 crore), Travis Head (Rs 14 crore), Nitish Kumar Reddy (Rs 6 crore)

Star players not retained: Washington Sundar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Money left: Rs 45 crore

No. of right-to-match options: 1 (one uncapped player)

Auction strategy: Sunrisers Hyderabad have managed to retain the core of the team which took them to the final of IPL 2024. They will have retained their opening combo of Head and Abhishek. They need to invest in strengthening their bowling unit, especially a bowling partner for Cummins. They will also look to invest in India youngsters who can serve the franchise for long.

Rajasthan Royals

No. of players retained: 6 - Sanju Samson (Rs 18 crore), Yashasvi Jaiswal (Rs 18 crore), Riyan Parag (Rs 14 crore), Dhruv Jurel (Rs 14 crore), Shimron Hetmyer (Rs 11 crore), Sandeep Sharma (Rs 4 crore)

Star players not retained: Yuzvendra Chahal, Jos Buttler, R Ashwin

Money left: Rs 41 crore

No. of right-to-match options: 0

Auction strategy: Rajasthan Royals have retained the most players along with Kolkata and kept the core intact. The retained India players who are in form bodes well for the franchise. However, it would have been tough to release Buttler from the squad. However, it won’t be a surprise if Rajasthan go on a bidding war for Buttler in the auction as the Englishman has been an asset for the team as an opener, but they have no RTM left. They would also look to get suitable spin replacements for Chahal and Ashwin.

Gujarat Titans

No. of players retained: 5 - Rashid Khan (Rs 18 crore), Shubman Gill (Rs 16.50 crore), Sai Sudharsan (Rs 8.50 crore), Rahul Tewatia (Rs 4 crore), Shahrukh Khan (Rs 4 crore)

Star players not retained: Mohammed Shami, David Miller

Money left: Rs 69 crore

No. of right-to-match options: 1 (one capped player)

Auction strategy: Gujarat Titans have released an inconsistent Miller and Shami who is still recovering from an injury. They have to find a suitable pace bowler to replace Shami. But GT might use RTM for Shami in the hope the pacer would get fit for IPL 2025. Nevertheless, the franchise would look for a backup for Shami anyway.

Lucknow Super Giants

No. of players retained: 5 - Nicholas Pooran (Rs 21 crore), Ravi Bishnoi (Rs 11 crore) Mayank Yadav (Rs 11 crore), Mohsin Khan (Rs 4 crore), Ayush Badoni (Rs 4 crore)

Star players not retained: KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis, Quinton de Kock

Money left: Rs 69 crore

No. of right-to-match options: 1 (one capped player)

Auction strategy: As expected, Rahul was released after the controversy last season, and the team’s poor performance. However, the franchise is paying Rs 21 crore to retain Pooran who is likely to lead the team in IPL 2025 although there is no official announcement yet. They also have retained four India youngsters who showed potential last season. Lucknow Super Giants strategy in the auction might be on similar lines as well.

Punjab Kings

No. of players retained: 2  - Shashank Singh (Rs 5.5 crore), Prabhsimran Singh (Rs 4 crore)

Star players not retained: Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran, Jonny Bairstow

Money left: Rs 110.5 crore

No. of right-to-match options: 4 (Four capped players)

Auction strategy: Punjab Kings are going for an overhaul of the squad, having retained just two India players. Surprisingly, they have released Arshdeep who has been in good form in the shortest format. However, PBKS might use an RTM card to retain the pacer. With Rs 110.5 crore, PBKS will go on a bidding war for players such as Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer as a possible captain. They might break the bank to go for some star overseas players as well.

Delhi Capitals

No. of players retained: 4 - Axar Patel (Rs 16.50 crore), Kuldeep Yadav (Rs 13.25 crore), Tristan Stubbs (Rs 10 crore), Abishek Porel (Rs 4 crore)

Star players not retained: Rishabh Pant, David Warner

Money left: Rs 73 crore

No. of right-to-match options: 2 (One uncapped and one capped player, or two capped players)

Auction strategyDelhi Capitals could not retain Pant who decided to go into the pool. He will be the most-sought after player in the auction as he offers a triple-combo of captaincy, keeping, and batting. Delhi have retained Axar who is likely to captain the squad if the team does not get any other suitable captaincy options. There are many spots to fill, and Delhi might be engaged in bidding wars with other franchises in the auction.
