India will host South Africa Women’s Cricket Team for a multi-format series, including a Test match after almost a decade, from June 16 to July 9, 2024. The tour includes three ODIs, one Test and three T20Is. This comes after hosting England and Australia last year at the Wankhede.

Chennai will host a Women's Test match for the first time since 1976, when West Indies faced off against India. The Proteas women previously played a Test match in India a decade ago, when the hosts recorded an innings victory.

The home series will start with ODIs in Bengaluru as part of the 2022–2025 ICC Women's Championship. After the ODIs, Chennai will host the four-day Test from June 28 to July 1. This will be followed by the three-match T20I series.

Why is this multi-format series important for India?

The upcoming South Africa Women's Tour of India for a three-format series holds significant importance for the home team. The series will help rebuilding the team for the upcoming T20 World Cup and the ODI World Cup next year. Meanwhile, the Test match is an addition to the fixture and a part of the initiative by the BCCI and Cricket South Africa (CSA) to give more impetus to Women's Cricket in the traditional format.

The tour provides a valuable opportunity for young India Women cricketers like Shreyanka Patil, Titas Sadhu and others to showcase their talent and skills against a competitive team. The series offer younger players a chance to test their skills against a formidable opponent. It provides a platform for players to gain valuable experience, learn from international competition and further develop their game.

Besides this, the young players also have a chance to book their place in the T20 World Cup squad by showing their prowess in this series. It is also a very good opportunity for players struggling with their form to regain it ahead of the mega event. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who has been out of touch from a quite long time, could try finding that connection back.

In the red-ball format, India might experiment by giving the youngsters a chance in the playing 11. India has started the Inter-zonal multi-day Trophy which is a great step to develop the longest format. The team would see players coming in based on this Inter-zonal tournament. In ODIs also, India could see a few new faces in the team. However, in the T20Is, they will not try experimenting too much. Rather, they’ll look to strengthen their current squad by giving their players more opportunities.
