Sixth-ranked Mumbai Indians (MI) locked horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the penultimate league game of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday. MI held a slight edge having won 11 games, while SRH have won on rest of nine occasions.


Green century puts Mumbai Indians ahead with a vital win

MI captain Rohit Sharma on winning the toss decided to bowl first on a good batting surface. Umran Malik came into side for SRH while Kumar Kartikeya replaced Hrithik Shokeen for MI.


SRH’s new opening pair of Mayank Agarwal and Vivrant Sharma went off to flier with 53/0 in the powerplay before stretching it to 93/0 at the halfway mark. Some powerful batting from Agarwal steered them to 157/1 in 15 overs before Mumbai bowlers slowed down Hyderabad to 200/5 in their allotted 20 overs.


Mumbai began strongly with 60/1 in the powerplay before Cameron Green fired them down to 114/1 in 10 overs. The Mumbai batters continued the fireworks to carry them to 160/2 in 15 overs before they chased 201 in 18 overs thanks to Cameron Green’s 100*.



Talking point: MI showed great dominance in home conditions

Five of Mumbai’s eight victories have come at their home ground where they have showed dominant performances throughout the whole season. Even if the bowlers have gone for runs, the batters have performed extraordinarily to take them home.


They have been excellent in the past in familiar conditions and they continue to do so in this season to make an outstanding comeback in the backend of the season.

Agarwal-Vivrant 140-run opening stand blew away Mumbai

In their last league game, Sunrisers Hyderabad tried a new opening pair of Mayank Agarwal and Vivrant Sharma who gave them a solid start.


Vivrant began with a boundary against Jason Behrendorff in deep cover before Agarwal joined the party with two back-to-back fours against him through the cover region. Vivrant smashed Chris Jordan for two consecutive boundaries before creaming Piyush Chawla for a straight six. He has managed unbeaten 23 T20 runs in 13 balls against Chawla.


Agarwal too smacked Behrendorff over cover for a sweet six before Vivrant cracked the same bowler for the same result over long-on. Agarwal now has unbeaten 29 runs in 15 balls against Behrendorff with four boundaries and one six.


Vivrant finished on 69 runs in 47 balls with nine fours and two sixes. Agarwal who cracked 83 runs in 46 balls shouldering on eight boundaries and four sixes, now has 2601 IPL runs in 123 games.

Akash Madhwal slowed down SRH with 4/37

Akash Madhwal has been sensational for Mumbai Indians in this season and he proved his worth again.


On the penultimate ball of his second over, Madhwal broke the opening stand by sending back Vivrant Sharma for 69 who smacked the short ball in the hands of the deep mid-wicket fielder. He gave away just six runs besides caging Mayank Agarwal on 83 who edged the slower short ball to the wicketkeeper.


Coming back for his last over, Madhwal delivered just six runs besides breaking the stumps of Heinrich Klaasen and Harry Brook on two consecutive balls to finish on 4/37 in his four overs. He finished his debut IPL season with eight wickets in six games at an economy of nine.

Green-Rohit destroyed SRH with 128-run stand for the second wicket

Mumbai Indians lost an early wicket of Ishan Kishan, when Cameron Green joined under-performing Rohit Sharma in the middle. Green didn’t waste time driving Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a straight boundary before Rohit Sharma smashed Mayank Dagar for a four through backward point. Green cracked Nitish Reddy for a six over deep mid-wicket before slashing Kartik Tyagi for a six over short third man.


Green then powered Dagar for two more sixes over long-on and deep mid-wicket, before Rohit muscled Umran Malik for three consecutive boundaries towards fine leg. Green smashed Vivrant for a six to celebrate his third IPL fifty in 20 balls.


Rohit too notched up his 42nd IPL fifty with a boundary before being dismissed on 56 in 37 balls with eight boundaries and one six to now have 6192 runs in 241 IPL games. The second wicket stand of 128 runs put MI in a commanding position. Cameron Green kept on putting the ball in all parts of the park to register his maiden IPL century and remained unbeaten on 100 with eight fours and as many as sixes to finish this season with 381 runs in 14 games.



Points Table Scenario & What’s to Come

With this victory, Mumbai go up to the fourth position with 16 points but their net run rate of -0.04 is still behind RCB and they have to wait for the result of the game between RCB and GT to earn the guaranteed ticket for the playoffs.


Gujarat Titans will take on Chennai Super Kings in the Qualifier 1 on May 23 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
